Biography
Phineas Masuvhelele is a third generation drum maker for the royal Venda families. Living at Mukondeni in Venda, he is working in close association with the well-known Mashamba potters.
Phineas is also a renowned artist, known for his “stories in wood”, interpreting traditional tales in his carvings. Many people are against the chopping down of trees for drums, but in Phineas’ words “In the playing of the drums, the spirits of the trees live on to enrich our cultural lives”.
