Meshack Raphalalani

Meshack Raphalalani was born in 1950 and lives at Tshakuma, Venda. His sculptures depict the works of a man who has had many years of experience. Meshack is a highly skilled artist.

He focuses on the carving of human figures, which he depicts in various themes, exuding a deep knowledge of his subject matter. Meshack mainly produces large works of one metre and up.

Nelson Mukhuba

“…I am the artist that can see inside the wood…I can see the picture while the wood is still on the tree. I am the doctor of wood because I can see inside the wood” – Nelson Mukhuba 1987

Nelson was born in 1925 and died in 1987. He worked mainly in marula and jacaranda woods, drawing on the reservoir of traditional wood-carving skills among the Venda people.

Noria Mabasa

Noria Mabasa was born in 1938 in Tsigalo, Venda. Today she lives and works in Vuwani, Venda. She has been a full-time artist since 1976, receiving her inspiration for her clay and wood works from dreams. She is the only Venda woman who sculpts in wood. Noria’s works deal with traditional issues, especially those pertaining to woman.

Owen Ndou

Born in 1964 at Gwamasenga, Venda, Owen Ndou now lives in Hamutsha. Owen’s love of sculpting started at a very young age, however it was after school, in 1984, that he started carving full time. For many years Owen and his brother Goldwin, worked together on pieces.

Paul Manganyi and the School of Jackson

Paul Manganyi was born on the 17th June 1973 in the Bakhota region, Northern Province and lives at Nwaxiniamani, in the Limpopo Province. Paul’s maternal grandfather is the highly acclaimed Jackson Hlungwani, and he is the eldest of two children.

Phillip Rikhotso

Rikhotso, who was born in Mamitwa in 1945 near Dzumeri in former Gazankulu in the Limpopo Province, started wood-carving in 1977 and takes as his inspiration, the rich and varied XiTsonga folktales of his childhood. He now lives in Daniel Village with his wife and children, two of whom have followed in their father’s creative footsteps.

Phineas Masuvhelele is a third generation drum maker for the royal Venda families. Living at Mukondeni in Venda, he is working in close association with the well-known Mashamba potters.

Samson Mudzunga

Samson Mudzunga was born in 1938 in Shanzha, Dopeni in Venda (now Limpopo), where he continues to live and work. His family is from the area around Lake Fundudzi which in Venda mythology is regarded as a sacred site. A self-taught sculptor and carver, his first figurative sculptures were included on an exhibition at the Fuba Gallery in 1988.

Susanna (Sanna) Swart

Susanna was born in Pretoria in 1967. In 1989 she graduated from the University of Pretoria with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree, majoring in sculpture and visual communication.

Thomas Kubayi

Thomas was born on the 13th October 1972, at Tshivhuyuni village, Venda. He is from the traditional Tsonga tribe.

In 1983, in Standard 1 (11years old), his art began to develop. It was at this stage that he also became involved in traditional dance.
