Hendrik Nekhofhe

Hendrik was born in 1955 in Venda. He lives in Shayandima, where both his studio and his home are. He started working at a very young age with clay, making pots, and inspired by his mother. He excelled at drawing in school. Many of his sculptures begin as a drawing and are then transformed into a wooden sculpture.

Israel Tavhana

Israel is from the Northern Province, and is a sculptor. His greatest influence is his father, artist Paul Tavhana.

Israel went to Dimbanyika School, and passed Standard 8 in 1997. He has a passion for his art and also enjoys carpentry. He has only been carving since 1994, and wants to pursue his talent further.

Jackson Hlungwani

Born in 1923 at Nkanyani, NorthernProvince, Jackson Hlungwani is one of the best known and critically acclaimed South African artists. The son of a Shangaan migrant worker, he started carving fulltime after losing a finger in an industrial accident. Today he lives at Mbokota village near Elim.

Jackson is probably best known for his carvings depicting fish and themes around them.

Jameson Ramvuvhelo

Jameson was born in 1946 and today lives in Mavunde, a village in the Venda region, Limpopo Province. Jameson started carving in 1978 at the age of 32, and his motivation came from the fact that in villages in and around Venda, artists were producing works, while in his own village, there were no artists of which to speak.

Johannes Maswanganyi was born in 1948 in Msengi village near Giyani in the Limpopo Province where he still lives today.

John Baloyi (1964-2006)

Born in 1964, John Baloyi (Shangaan) started carving in 1973. John’s inspiration was his grandfather who crafted traditional chairs and coffins. Because of financial circumstances, John left school at the end of Std 9, continued carving, but also had to supplement his income by working as a miner.

Lilian Munyai (1962-2002)

Master potter, Lilian Munyai was born in 1962 and lived at Mukondeni Village near Elim, Venda. She was instructed in the art of pottery by her mother from the age of eight.

Her pots were made in the traditional way, which has accompanied by her matrilineal line for centuries.

Lucky Makamu

Lucky Makamu was born in 1962 in Gazankulu and is Shangaan by birth. Now settled in Venda, he has exhibited his carved wooden sculptures and totem figures at exhibitions in Johannesburg.
